Vagina myths

Being nearly 23 years old I have heard so many myths and conspiracies regarding vaginas, and growing
up I was definitely guilty of believing a few. Vaginas aren't talked about or bought up as much as in
conversation as penis' are. The issue with not talking about things is the myths and 'rumours' that then
appear as a result. Since my sex myths post was well received I thought it was time to talk about vagina
myths and set the facts straight.

IF YOU SLEEP AROUND, YOU HAVE A LOOSE VAGINA
This is the myth that irritates me the most, and also the one that I am constantly hearing. Whether
someone has sex with 100 people once or 1 person 100 times, there will be no different with the vagina.
If someone can give birth, vaginally, and the vaginal muscles stretch then go back to how they were
previously, sleeping around will make the vagina loose.

DISCHARGE IS DIRTY
Discharge is completely normal and is actually healthy. Discharge is the vagina's way of cleaning itself
(your vagina is self cleaning) and it is full healthy bacteria which protects itself against infections. It is
important to keep an eye on your discharge, the colour and consistency as well as if you are experiencing
any itching or change in smells, in the case of seeking professional attention.

ALL VAGINAS LOOK THE SAME
I can't believe this is still a myth. By now we should all know that nothing looks the same. Whether
that is someones body or someone's genitals. No 2 look the same. Size, shape, length, colour, every
single one looks different. That is normal. There is no 'correct' looking vagina.

YOUR CHERRY 'POPS' WHEN YOU LOOSE YOUR VIRGINITY
The hymen is a thin layer of tissue, part of the vagina, that sometimes when having penetrative sex for the
first time can tear and cause a bleed, however it doesn't 'pop'. The hymen can in fact tear when horse
riding, exercising or using a tampon, it doesn't always have to happen when you loose your virginity.

  3. Another myth linked to your one about discharge is that you have to clean it! Clean the vulva, sure, but not the vagina.
