It's been a hot minute, since I shared a 'myths' post and since my last one about masturbation (read here)
was so well received I decided it was time for another. This time it's sex myths. There are so many
common myths and false misconceptions surrounding sex, that despite being in a society and world with
access to all the technology we could ask for, still believe to be true! I've narrowed it down to, what I
believe are, the 6 most common sex myths.
CONTRACEPTION IS DOWN TO THE WOMEN
Contraception is such an important topic and one to take seriously. It is a joint decision to make between
all parties, not just the women. Yes all contraceptions, except condoms, are for the women, however
you shouldn't just assume that a women is taking contraception because 'she's a women'. Have that
conversation and discuss what your options are. The only way to prevent an STI is by using a condom.
Read my blog post here to find the appropriate and right contraception for you.
YOU CAN'T GET PREGNANT ON YOUR FIRST TIME
There are so many myths surrounding different times that 'you can't get pregnant', such as; your first
time, standing up, in a bath, on your period, if they pull out and many more. The truth is, if you are having
unprotected sex at any time, no matter when or where, you are at risk of getting pregnant.
YOU CAN ONLY LOOSE YOUR VIRGINITY THROUGH VAGINAL SEX
You do not have to have heterosexual sex to loose your virginity. The word virginity doesn't apply to just
penetrative sex. There are multiple meanings and interpretations of what loosing your virginity is and what
it means to different genders and sexualities is up to you. Your first time is something you will remember
for the rest of your life, and should only happen if and when you are comfortable.
YOU DON'T NEED AN STI TEST IF YOU'RE IN A RELATIONSHIP
Whether you are having unprotected casual sex or in a relationship you are still at risk of catching an
STI. If you are having unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex make sure to have regular check ups. It is
recommended that you have an STI test every time you have a new partner, or at least once a year.
PORN IS JUST LIKE REAL SEX
I have heard this for so many years and it's not true. The people taking part in porn are paid professionals,
and that is there job. They are doing what looks the best to bring the most entertainment to those who
watch it. There are some things that they may do, which you do in your sex life, but porn is not realistic.
MASTURBATING IS DIRTY
This is a hugely common misunderstand, especially surrounding female masturbation. It is completely
normal for both men and women to masturbate. There is no right or wrong amount that a person can do it
and not everyone has to. Masturbation doesn't just have to be done solo, you can also do it together if you
are wanting to change things up in the bedroom. Read my blog post here on different masturbation myths.
