Moving out - 1 year later

It's been just over a year since I moved out, and a lot has happened in that short space time. There has
been a lot of changes, good and bad memories as well as lessons learnt. I have done a few blog posts on
moving out and living alone, but I wanted to do a specific post on everything over the past year.

I originally moved out at the beginning of December 2020, with my ex boyfriend after only 6 weeks of
dating. We have since both said how quick it was, however it felt right at the time and is something that
neither of us regret. This was the first time I'd never moved house and lived without my parents and I
couldn't contain the excitement. For so long I had dreamed of having a place of my own, decorating the
way I wanted and being more independent.

After 6 months of living together me and my ex split up and I found myself living alone. This was
something that I never wanted to do and never anticipated wold happen. Surprisingly I adjusted quickly
and have been living alone since. The emotional side of moving out and living alone has been a tough
journey. I have loved the independence, being able to decorate and have things how I want and walking
into my home knowing everything is mine and bought with my hard earned money. There have been some
struggles and days when I wish I lived with someone, but overall I've loved it.

There is a lot of responsibility with living alone, which I knew before but it can be quite stressful.
Before living alone I knew that I didn't have bills to pay and all the money I earned was for whatever
I wanted. Where as now, if I don't pay my bills there are serious consequences, I loose my freedom and
everything I've worked for. That is one of the downsides with living alone as the responsibility is all on
me rather than split evenly between 2 people. The money side of things has been a stress at times, as I
moved out with someone and my job at the time only just covered my half of the bills. I quickly got a
new job but a few months later I got made redundant and found myself in a rush to get a job that would
work for me mentally but also financially.

I am such a perfectionist and getting my home perfect for me, didn't happen as quickly as I thought. I'm
very thankful that the main furniture pieces and most expensive items, were what I bought first and made
sure to have straight away. However it's the small touches around the house that make it into a home. 1
year later and there are only a handful of items that I know I want, which I'm hoping to get soon.

Overall I have loved every minute of the last year. All the ups and downs, laughter and sadness has
been worth it and I wouldn't change it for the world. Living alone is something I will forever cherish
and never take for granted and I'm beyond thankful for every memory made and to come.

  2. I think living alone is a really good thing to do at least once in your life! I lived alone for about 9 months before moving in with my boyfriend and I'm really glad I did!

  7. My husband and I have been married almost 15 years and between October 2020 and August 2021 I was solo parenting both of our boys as he got things ready for us to move to Copenhagen for our big adventure. I was so used to sharing the load and working together on things around the house and with the boys that at first it was really strange and things would pile up because I was still in that "oh Chris will do it" then I found a rhythm and found what worked for me and the boys. Once we were all back together again it was really hard - Chris had his way of doing things here which often didn't line up with what we used to do (or what I did) in the UK.

Finding the way can be really hard but I'm so pleased to see you've found your way and found what works for you. Here's to the next year!

  9. Love this post! I’m so eager to move out and have my own place but the financial side of it all stresses me out haha! It’s like my brain can’t comprehend how someone is supposed to afford to run a whole house but still have money for a ‘social life’ or anything else after ahaha! I’m sure it’ll all come to me when it finally happens but for now I’ll be stressed lol!

  11. What a lovely post! Living alone is such a lovely experience even though it comes with its own set of challenges. I started living alone from December 2020, and it's been one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

  12. I am sure it is quite the experience living alone, with both pros and cons. I am glad you got yourself sorted though and I guess it must be amazing having your own space.
